Coronavirus in Bihar LIVE Updates: Auxiliary polling stations to ensure social distancing during Bihar elections

Seeking to ensure social distancing norms are followed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Election Commission has decided that Bihar will have more polling stations to avoid crowding. Auxiliary polling stations will be set up in the same building or premises of the original polling station to spread out voters. After the outbreak of the coronavirus in India, Bihar will be the first state to have assembly polls. The state has nearly 7.20 crore voters and the term of the 243-member assembly ends on November 29 this year. The new assembly has to be formed before November 29. According to the minutes of a meeting, the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer held with major political parties recently, the auxiliary polling stations will have the same serial number as the main polling station, but with a suffix like  ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’. Bihar currently has 72,000 polling stations. If the auxiliary polling  stations cannot be set up in the same building or premises, it would be set up at a nearby place.

Coronavirus in Telangana LIVE Updates: State reports 1,018 new COVID-19 cases, overall tally breaches 17,000 mark

Telangana continued to witness a spike in COVID-19 positive cases with 1,018 new infections being reported on Wednesday taking the overall tally in the state to 17,357. The fatalities also increased to 267 after seven more people succumbed to the virus, a state government bulletin said. Out of the 1,018 fresh cases, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), accounted for 881 followed by 36 in Medchal district and 33 in Ranga Reddy district, it said. A total of 788 people have been discharged on Wednesday after treatment taking the total number of discharged to 8,082 so far, while 9,008patients were under treatment, it said. According to the bulletin, 4,234 samples were tested on Wednesday. Cumulatively, 92,797 samples have been tested.

Coronavirus in Gujarat LIVE Updates: Record 675 new cases in state, death toll rises to 21

Gujarat reported its highest single-day increase in the number of coronavirus patients at 675 on Wednesday, taking the number of cases in the state to 33,318, the health department said. The death toll in the state due to the pandemic rose to 1,869 with 21 COVID-19 patients succumbing, it added. With 368 patients discharged from hospitals, the number of recovered cases in Gujarat rose to 24,038. Ahmedabad district reported 215 new cases, followed by Surat at 201. Surat district reported more than 200 cases for the first time. The tally of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad district now stands at 21,128 and that in Surat at 5,030. Concerned over the rising number of coronavirus cases in Surat city, state’s Principal Secretary (Health) Jayanti Ravi on Wednesday visited the city. She visited affected zones ofKatargam, Nandu Doshi’s Wadi, Amaroli-Raghuveer Society and Varachha Sudama Chowk, tweeted Municipal Commissioner B N Pani.

Coronavirus in Delhi LIVE Updates: Kejriwal government sets up 500-bed facility at CWG village

A 500-bed COVID-19 care facility is being readied by the Delhi government at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) village here, and it is likely to accept patients from Monday, officials said on Wednesday. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia visited the newly-built facility on Wednesday to review preparations. “Around 500 beds have been installed at this COVID-19 care centre here. It will be attached to the LNJP Hospital,” the CM said. The facility will have separate wards for men and women, and stay-in facilities will be provided to doctors and nurses, he said. “A massive expansion of the number of COVID-19 beds is underway in Delhi. The number of cases in Delhi is now decreasing (comparatively) and the situation seems to be getting under control,” Kejriwal told the media after the visit. “I hope and pray that the facilities created and the beds installed across the city are not required, but even if they are, we are not lacking in our efforts. In case there is a spike in the number of coronavirus cases, we are ready to deal with it,” he said.

Coronavirus in Goa LIVE Updates: State records 72 new COVID-19 cases; 74 discharged, one dies

Goa on Wednesday reported 72 new COVID-19 cases, three of them policemen, taking the tally to 1,387, while one more patients succumbed to the infection, pushing up the toll to four, officials said. According to a state health department bulletin issued here, a 66-year-old COVID-19 patient, hailing from Taleigao village, died on Tuesday evening at ESI Hospital, a facility dedicated to treat coronavirus cases. Altogether, 72 more people tested positive, while 74 others were discharged following recovery from the deadly infection, it said. A senior health department official said the Ponda police station in North Goa had to be temporarily shut after an officer and two constables posted there tested positive for the infection. On Tuesday, two constables posted at the state police headquarters building in Panaji had also tested positive after which the home department took up a massive sanitisation drive in the premises.

Coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh LIVE Updates: Noida’s total tally at 2,362, 58 fresh cases reported today

Fifty-eight more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar, pushing the tally of cases to 2,362, the highest for any district in the state, official data on Wednesday showed. Also, 17 patients were discharged, leaving 817 active cases in the district, according to the data issued by the UP Health Department for a 12-hour period. The district has so far recorded 22 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus, which has claimed 718 lives in the state and 17,400 across the country, as per official statistics. With the recovery of 17 more patients since Tuesday, the number of people who have been discharged so far reached 1,523, the highest in the state, it added. The recovery rate of patients dropped slightly to 64.47 per cent from 65.36 per cent on Tuesday and 64.76 per cent on Monday, according to official statistics. Gautam Buddh Nagar currently has the second highest active cases of COVID-19 after adjoining Ghaziabad (851) district in the state. They are followed by Lucknow (463), Kanpur Nagar (276), Meerut (267), Hapur (210), Varanasi (186), Aligarh (187) and Bulandshahr (163), the data stated.

Coronavirus in Maharashtra LIVE Updates: 44 more test coronavirus positive at Nagpur central jail

A total of 44 persons, including police personnel and inmates of the Nagpur Central Jail, tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the total count to 53, a senior officer said. On Tuesday, nine police personnel, including an officer of the jail, had tested positive for the viral infection. “A total of 157 persons, including officers, police personnel and prisoners of the central jail were tested on Tuesday, of whom 44 persons tested positive in the report that arrived on Wednesday,” Nagpur Central Jail superintendent Anup Kumre told PTI. The exact break-up of the police personnel and the jail inmates contracting the infection was not available immediately. The jail currently houses 1,800 inmates and 265 police personnel. Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus patients in Nagpur district rose to 1,477 on Wednesday. The death toll stood at 25. A total of 1,193 patients have recovered so far, a district official said.

Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates: 134 news cases in CRPF; total tally over 1,300

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reported 134 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally of the cases in country’s largest paramilitary to over 1,300, officials said. As per latest data, out of the total 1,385 coronavirus cases in the force, 682 are under treatment, while 694 have recovered. A total of 134 fresh cases have been reported in the 3.25 lakh personnel strong CRPF, the lead internal security force of the country, in the last 24 hours. Twenty-two personnel also recovered during the same time period, the officials said. There have been nine deaths from the disease in the CRPF that is mainstay for anti-Naxal operations and counter-terrorist operations in Kashmir valley. The ITBP too reported 23 fresh cases and 14 recoveries on Wednesday. As per official data, the about 90,000 personnel-strong force has a total of 354 cases out of which 251 have recovered from COVID-19, while 103 personnel are under treatment.

Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates: India records single-day highest jump of 507 deaths, June worst month with close to 4 lakh cases

India on Wednesday recorded the highest single-day jump of 507 COVID-19 deaths and also a majority of cases–close to four lakh–in June to make it the worst month for the country prompting some states to go for varying degrees of lockdown. Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu have accounted for over 70 per cent of 17,400 coronavirus deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The data updated at 8 am on Wednesday also showed that 18,653 new infections were reported in 24 hours taking the  tally to 5,85,493. At the same time, the recovery rate was also steadily improving to touch nearly 60 per cent. It is for the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus cases have increased by more than 18,000. The country has seen a surge of 3,94,958 infections or nearly 68 per cent of the total in June, according to an analysis of the ministry data.

Coronavirus in Gujarat LIVE Updates: Ahmedabad’s COVID-19 tally rises by 215 to 21,128; 8 more die

The number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad rose by 215 to 21,128 on Wednesday, state health department said. The death toll in the district went up by 8 in the day to 1,449, it said. With 125 patients getting discharged in the day, the number of the recovered cases in the district has risen to 16,093. Of the 215 new cases, 208 cases were reported from the areas under the Ahmedabad municipal corporation. Seven cases were reported from other parts of the district, as per the health department.

Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally rose to 1,80,298 on Wednesday with the addition of 5,537 cases, the state health department said. The death toll due to the virus reached 8,053 with 198 more people succumbing to the infection, it said. As many as 2,243 patientswere discharged post recovery on Wednesday, which took the number of recovered persons to 93,154 in the state, it added. So far, 9,92,723 people have been tested across the state and the number of active cases is 79,091, the health department said in a statement.

Karnataka on Wednesday recorded the biggest single day spike of 1,272 new COVID-19 cases and seven related deaths, taking the total number of infections to 16,514 and the death toll to 253, the health department said. The day also saw 145 patients getting discharged after recovery. Out of 1,272 fresh cases reported on Wednesday, a whopping 735 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone. The previous biggest single day spike was recorded on June 28 with 1,267 cases. As of July 1 evening, cumulatively 16,514 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 253 deaths and 8,063 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin. It said, out of 8,194 active cases, 7,902 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and stable, while 292 are in ICU.

Delhi recorded 2,442 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally in the city over the 89,000-mark, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 2,803, authorities said. On June 23, the national capital had reported the highest single-day spike of 3,947 cases. Recently, Delhi had eclipsed Mumbai as the city worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic in the country. Sixty-one fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the Delhi health department bulletin said on Wednesday. The death toll from COVID-19 in Delhi stood at 2,742 on Tuesday. The bulletin said the death toll from the coronavirus infection has risen to 2,803, and the total number of cases mounted to 89,802.

Coronavirus in Assam LIVE Updates: State’s tally crosses 8,000, situation critical in Guwahati

Assam recorded 753 fresh Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the state’s tally to 8,547, while the death toll rose to 12, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. With 502 of the new cases in Guwahati city, he termed the Covid-19 situation in Guwahati as “most critical”. Guwahati, which falls under Kamrup (Metro) district and where a complete lockdown has been imposed for 14 days since June 28 midnight, has reported around 1,800 cases so far. “As the people are not cautious enough, that is why there is a rapid spike of coronavirus cases in the state’s main city,” Sarma said, noting that even after giving samples for testing, people are not isolating themselves. He also told the media that so far over four lakh samples have been tested. “The health authorities have evolved new testing methods in which sample testing report would be available in 15 minutes to one hour time,” he added.

Coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh LIVE Updates: 13,861 total cases in MP; death toll climbs to 581

The COVID-19 case count in Madhya Pradesh climbed to 13,861 on Wednesday with addition of 268 new cases, including 73 from Morena, during the last 24 hours, officials said. With 9 more people succumbing to the viral infection, the death toll in the state has risen to 581, they said. Of them, four deaths were reported from Bhopal, three from Indore while one each patient died in Morena and Barwani, officials said. A total of 260 persons were discharged from hospitals in the day, taking the number of the recovered cases to 10,655. Of the 268 fresh cases, the highest count of 73 was reported from Morena district bordering Rajasthan’s Dholpur, followed by 41 cases in Bhopal and 25 each in Indore and Gwalior, officials said.

As many as 66 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, taking the coronavirus tally in the state to 2,947. A state health department bulletin here said 22 cases were reported from Nainital, 20 from Dehradun, nine from Uttarkashi, five from Almora, four from Tehri and two each from Haridwar, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar. Most of them have a travel history to Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, it said. With the addition of new cases, the state’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,947. As many as 2,317 patients have recovered and 41 have died due to the disease, it said.

The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday issued notices to yoga guru Ramdev’s Patanjali, Union and state governments, seeking a reply within a week on the firm’s Coronil drug. Hearing a PIL challenging Ramdev’s claims regarding the medicine, a division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice R C Khulbe issued the notices. It asked the Union and state governments; Patanjali; the director of the AYUSh department in Uttarakhand; ICMR and Rajasthan’s NIMS University, which is said to have collaborated with the company in manufacturing the medicine, to file their replies within a week. The PIL filed by advocate Mani Kumar has sought a ban on the drug, accusing the yoga guru of misleading people by launching Coronil as a medicine to cure coronavirus. The drug neither has the certification of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) nor did Patanjali Ayurved has the licence to manufacture it, the PIL has contended.

Coronavirus in Ladakh LIVE Updates: 17 more test positive for COVID-19; 46 patients cured

The Union Territory of Ladakh recorded 17 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally in the twin districts of Leh and Kargil to 990, officials said. However, the number of active cases in Ladakh dropped to 295 — 183 in Kargil and 112 in Leh — after 46 more patients were cured of the disease in Kargil and subsequently discharged, they said. The 295 cases included 12 people, who tested positive on Wednesday. The new cases included 12 from Kargil and five from Leh, the officials said. They said the condition of all the patients suffering from COVID-19 is “stable”. Ladakh had recorded one coronavirus-related death, while 694 people have been cured of the infection in the twin districts till date. Meanwhile, authorities in Kargil district on Wednesday relaxed COVID-19 restrictions in the district, allowing opening of shops except barber shops, salons and spas, while there was also no restriction on the plying of private vehicles.

Coronavirus in Maharashtra LIVE Updates: ‘4,938 cops infected by coronavirus, 60 of them dead’

As many as 4,938 police personnel in Maharashtra have tested positive for coronavirus so far and 60 of them have succumbed to the viral infection, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Wednesday. He said 38 of the 60 deceased were from the Mumbai Police force. As many as 3,813 of the 4,938 infected police personnel have recovered from COVID-19 disease while over 1,000 others are currently under treatment, the home minister said in a statement. The number of the offences registered under section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has risen to 1,39,702 since the lockdown came into force, it said. A total of 29,298 arrests were made for violation of the lockdown norms and 85,780 vehicles impounded. There have been 290 instances of assaults on policemen and 860 arrests were made, Deshmukh said.

A cafe in Thailand’s Chiang Mai province has filed a damage lawsuit against the US government for allegedly spreading the COVID-19 pandemic, it was reported on Wednesday. Sawet Wianthong, the owner of Ooh Cafe at DK Park food centre, filed the case in court on June 26 seeking 450,000 baht ($14,572) in damage compensation, plus a 7.5 percent interest per annum, for which he held the US government accountable, IANS reported, citing Xinhua. He said his cafe had closed and lost considerable incomes during the last three months due to lockdown measures against the pandemic in the province. Thailand has imposed anti-pandemic measures under a health emergency rule nationwide. The country has so far reported 3,173 COVID-19 cases, with 58 deaths.

The Regional Medical Research Centre for NE Region at Dibrugarh in Assam has become the fourth laboratory in the country to successfully isolate SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus which can be used in the production of vaccine against the contagion in future, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. Scientists at the RMRC have isolated the COVID-19 virus in VERO-CCL81 cell line in the BSL-3 level lab available at the institute, he told a press conference here. RMRC, Dibrugarh is the third government laboratory in the country, after NIV (ICMR Lab), Pune and CCMB (CSIR lab), Hyderabad and fourth overall after Bharat Biotech, a private biotechnology laboratory in Hyderabad), to isolate the virus in tissue culture. The scientists used an immortal cell line VERO-CCL81, derived from kidney epithelial cell lines from green African monkey, which expresses the important ACE2 receptor needed by SARS- CoV-2 for cellular entry, Sarma said quoting the researchers.

Coronavirus in India LIVE Updates: Free grains reach to only 2.14 crore migrants; no beneficiaries in Goa, Telangana

The government distributed free foodgrains to 2.14 crore migrant labourers with no ration cards in May and June, but none have been covered in Goa and Telangana, the Union Food Ministry said on Wednesday. While two states Goa and Telangana did not distribute free grains for both the months, six states and union territories, namely Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim and Ladakh, did not distribute the grains in June, the ministry’s data showed. The Narendra Modi government had announced free foodgrains for an estimated 8 crore migrant workers, with neither central or state ration cards, for two months at a cost of Rs 3,500 crore. They were allotted 5 kg of foodgrains per person and 1 kg of chana dal per family for two months. “So far, free foodgrains have been distributed to 2.14 crore migrant workers so far across the country. This number is not static,” Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said in a digital press conference.
