Gujarat reported 1,108 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the count to 57,982, while 24 more patients succumbed to the infection, half of them in Surat alone, the state health department said.     With 24 more COVID-19 patients dying, statewide fatalities rose to 2,372, it said here. The number of patients discharged on Tuesday stood at 1,032, taking the total recoveries in Gujarat to 42,412. The state has 13,198 active cases, out of which 87 patients are on ventilator, the department said in a release. It said as many as 22,248 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, a rate of 342.27 tests per million per day. With this, a total of 6,90,092 samples have been tested so far for coronavirus in the state. Surat reported 293 new cases, the highest in the state, taking the tally to 12,819. With 156 new cases, Ahmedabad’s tally rose to 26,032.

US consumer confidence tumbled in July to a reading of 92.6 as coronavirus infections spread in many parts of the country. The Conference Board, a New York research organisation, reported Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index fell from a June reading of 98.3. The weakness came from a drop in the expectations index, which measures consumer views about the short-term outlook for income, business and labour market conditions. The consumer confidence index is closely watched for signals it can send about future consumer spending, which accounts for 70 per cent of economic activity.

Moderna aims to price coronavirus vaccine at $50-$60 per course: FT


Moderna Inc is planning to price its coronavirus vaccine at $50 to $60 per course, at least $11 more than another vaccine from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources. Moderna’s proposed price for a two-dose course sold to governments compares with $39 for two doses under a deal that Pfizer Inc and German partner BioNTech struck with the U.S. government. Industry analysts said Pfizer and BioNTech’s $2 billion deal to cover 50 million patients, which is contingent on an approvable product, would likely pressure other manufacturers to set similar prices. Moderna’s proposed price would apply to the United States and other high-income countries, according to the report.

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: Bihar COVID-19 death toll reaches 269; case tally climbs to 43,591

The COVID-19 tally in Bihar shot up by 2,480 on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 43,591, while the death toll mounted to 269, the state health department said in Patna. The department, however, said the surge in the number of infections was on account of previous days’ cases which were added to the system on Tuesday. The state reported 14 fresh deaths, taking the count of fatalities to 269. Patna has, so far, recorded the highest number of 41 COVID-19 deaths. Districts that have reported more than 10 deaths are Bhagalpur (26), Gaya (17), Nalanda (15), Rohtas (13), Muzaffarpur, Munger (11 each), Darbhanga, Begusarai and Samastipur (10 each). State capital Patna also tops the list in terms of the number of confirmed cases at 7,481. Its tally shot up by more than 414 since the previous day. Other badly affected districts include Bhagalpur (2,335 cases), Muzaffarpur (1,943), Gaya (1,819), Nalanda (1,745), Rohtas (1,695), Begusarai (1,497) and Siwan (1,341). The recovery rate in the state was 67.03 percent. Out of 43,591 positive cases, 29,220 people have recovered, 1,376 of them since Monday. Besides, there are 14,101 active cases in the state. The number of tests has increased to 16,275 from Monday’s 14,236, while the total number of samples tested till date was 4.86 lakh.

Three people were arrested in Nagpur for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 1.87 lakh from a house when the family residing there was in institutional quarantine amid the coronavirus outbreak, police said on Tuesday. The family returned to their home in Pachpaoli area on July 25 and found valuables missing after which a police complaint was filed, he said. “We have arrested Akash Ramu Gupta (25), Vinay alias Ashwin Chandrabhan Patekar (23) and Tushar alias Sonu Narendra Abhange (21). The valuables worth Rs 1.87 lakh have been recovered,” he added.

Kerala reported its highest single day spike of 1,167 COVID-19 cases so far of 1167, taking the infection tally to 20,894 while the death toll climbed to 67 with four more fatalities on Tuesday. Thirtythree health workers were among the infected and the active cases stood at 10,091 while 679 people were discharged on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Malappuram and Thrissur districts recorded over 100 cases on Tuesday and there were 486 hotspots in the state. Thiruvananthapuram with 227 cases on Tuesday topped the districts in the fresh infections, followed by Kottayam 118, Malappuram 112 and Thrissur 109.

Surat reported 293 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the district to 12,819, while a dozen more patients succumbed to the infection, the Gujarat health department said. With 12 fresh fatalities, the death toll rose to 565, it said. As many as 8,641 patients have been discharged in the state so far, 248 of them on Tuesday, said district health officials. Out of the 1,072 fresh cases reported on Tuesday, 200 were detected in Alwar, 134 in Jodhpur, 83 in Jaipur, 98 in Ajmer, 80 in Bikaner, 56 in Barmer, 54 in Bhilwara, 47 in Nagaur, 36 in Churu, 33 in Bharatpur, 29 in Udaipur, 28 in Ganganagar, 24 in Jalore, 22 in Dholpur and 20 in Sikar, among other districts. While 10,675 patients are under treatment, 26,094 have been discharged.

Plasma donation should become a people’s movement in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on Tuesday while inaugurating the states second plasma bank at a state-run hospital here and launching a web portal for donors. The second plasma bank was set up at the Capital Hospital, nearly two weeks after the first such facility was inaugurated at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Three other plasma banks will soon come up at government hospitals in Rourkela, Burla and Berhampur in phases, the chief minister said. “Preliminary results of COVID-19 plasma therapy in Odisha have been very encouraging. I am sure plasma donation will become a community-driven people’s movement with the participation of more and more people,” Patnaik said. Coronavirus in Haryana LIVE Updates: Haryana reports 749 fresh cases, 9 more deaths

Haryana reported nine more COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, taking their number to 406 as 749 fresh cases pushed the tally in the state to 32,876. According to a Health department bulletin, four fatalities were reported in Faridabad district, two in Ambala and one death each was reported in Gurgaon, Panchkula and Jhajjar. The districts that reported fresh cases include Faridabad (186), Gurgaon (101), Rewari (59), Rohtak (41), Sonipat (23), Panipat (42), Yamunanagar, Palwal and Ambala (38 each), Kurukshetra (28), Panchkula (14) and Jind and Fatehabad (17 each), as per the bulletin. A day after reporting a noteworthy dip in daily coronavirus cases, the national capital added 1,056 new COVID-19 patients, authorities said on Tuesday while not a single death was reported for the first time in two months at the LNJP hospital, a dedicated COVID-19 facility under the city government. The total number of coronavirus cases climbed to 1,32,275. With 28 fatalities, the death toll stood at 3,881, the health bulletin issued on Tuesday said. According to Monday’s health bulletin, 613 fresh cases were reported, lowest in the last two months. However, only 11,506 tests were conducted. A day later, the tests went up to 18,544 while the fresh cases rose to 1,056. The recovery rate stands at 88.83 per cent while the positivity rate was 5.69 per cent. The national recovery rate stands at 64 per cent.

With weddings and funerals turning out to be COVID-19 spreaders in some places, the Kerala government on Tuesday said a maximum of 20 people would only be allowed to participate in these events. Taking a serious view of over 70 people being infected after attending a marriage and a funeral in Kozhikode and Wayanaad districts recently, the government has decided to restrict the number of those attending such events, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. Hereafter, only 20 people can participate in marriages and funerals, he told reporters here. Earlier, the cap on attendees at marriages and funerals was 50. In Chekkiad panchayat in Kozhikode, more than 30 people who had participated in a wedding of a doctor on July 9 tested positive later, Vijayan said. The groom was among those who had tested positive. Vadakara MP, K Muraleedharan, had also attended the previous day’s functionand was asked by the Kozhikode Collector to go on quarantine.

A sero-prevalence study conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on 6,936 people from three municipal wards, found that 57 percent of participants in slums had been exposed to and developed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus. This was against just 16 percent of those tested in non-slum areas and residential societies. High density of population, lack of social distancing and common utilities like shared toilets have been inferred as the biggest reason for such high exposure and sero-prevalence in slums versus housing societies. The three wards circled areas in Dahisar, Matunga and Chembur. Prevalence of antibodies was marginally higher in women; however, age-wise the prevalence was comparable across the three wards.

Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday recorded 628 new coronavirus cases, 170 of them in Bhopal, taking the infection count in the state to 29,217, health department officials said. With ten more people succumbing to the viral infection, the death toll went up to 830, the officials said. Of them, three died in Chhatarpur, two in Indore and one each in Bhopal, Ujjain, Ratlam, Tikamgarh and Sehore, they said. Among the 628 new cases, the highest 170 was reported from Bhopal, followed by 73 in Indore, 51 in Gwalior and 48 in Chhatarpur, the officials said. Also, 552 persons were discharged from hospitals on Tuesday, taking the number of recoveries to 20,343. The number of cases in Indore, the worst-hit district in the state, rose by 73 to 7,058 and the death toll to 306, a state health department bulletin said.

Coronavirus in Karnataka News LIVE Updates: COVID-19 death toll breaches 2,000 mark in Karnataka; record single-day spike of 5,536 new cases

The COVID-19 death toll in Karnataka breached the 2,000 mark on Tuesday while the state reported its biggest single-day spike of 5,536 new cases, taking the total infection count to 1,07,001. The day also saw a record 2,819 patients getting discharged after recovery,  the health department said. As many as 102 people succumbed to the disease, taking the toll to 2,055. Of the fresh cases, marginally higher than the previous biggest daily spike of 5,324 on Monday, a total of 1,898 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. This is the fifth consecutive day that the state is reporting over 5,000 fresh cases. As of Tuesday evening, cumulatively 1,07,001 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 2,055 deaths and 40,504 discharges, the health department said in a bulletin. It said 63,822 patients had been admitted to isolation wards at designated hospitals, while 612 were in intensive care units (ICUs).

Assam Assembly’s Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the sixth MLA from the ruling BJP to get infected by the coronavirus in the state. Laskar’s driver has also tested positive for the infection, officials said. “With a very sad heart I would like to inform that I have been tested Covid-19 positive (+ve) from the first swab sample test few minutes back. I was not feeling well was since morning (sic),” Laskar said on his Facebook page. He, however, said that all his family members have been found to be negative for COVID-19. “Those who have came into my contact from the last 1 week, Please isolate yourself and get yourself covid tested sic),” Laskar posted. Silchar Lok Sabha MP Rajdeep Roy said that along with Laskar, his driver has also tested positive. A senior official of the Health Department said that Laskar, who is a BJP MLA from the Sonai constituency, is diabetic and doctors are closely monitoring his condition.

Tamil Nadu reported 6,972 fresh cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, pushing the overall tally beyond 2.27 lakh, while the total fatalities stood at 3,659 following 88 new deaths. As many as 4,707 persons were discharged today, taking the total recoveries to 1,66,956, leaving 57,073 active cases, according to a Health department bulletin. Over 61,000 samples were tested, while the state had 119 testing facilities.

Of the fresh cases, a total of 888 were infected through contacts while the source of infection of 55 people was not yet known, he told reporters here. While 122 people had come from abroad, as many as 96 returned to Kerala from other states. The four deaths were reported from Ernakulam, Kasaragod, Alappuzhaand Thiruvananthapuram districts, Vijayan said.

With 1,327 cases and six fatalities in four months, the trajectory of COVID-19 in the cold desert region of Ladakh validates the view that people living at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above are less likely to get infected compared to those in lowland areas, say experts here. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday said we have to live with coronavirus as the infection spread continued its steep upward climb in the state with the addition of 7,948 new cases taking the tally to 1,10,297.
