The Karnataka Congress president, DK Shivakumar, tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday. The Congress stalwart, who is often regarded as the party’s troubleshooter, has been admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. The number of Covid-19 cases in India crossed 31 lakh mark on Tuesday as 60,975 fresh cases and 848 deaths in the last 24 hours. The daily count on Tuesday witnessed a nominal drop as a total of 61,000 coronavirus cases were reported on Monday. The tally in the country rises to 31,67,324, including 7,04,348 active cases, 24,04,585 cured/discharged/migrated and 58,390 deaths, the Ministry of Health said.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ambassador on Tuesday formally reached out to India as New Delhi had formally approached for a partnership in the production of the Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V. The Indian embassy in Moscow has been engaging with the Gamaleya National Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology, which has developed the vaccine, to get safety and efficacy data on the vaccine trials.In other news, JMM chief Shibu Soren, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, was shifted to a private hospital on Monday evening as a precautionary measure, official sources said. Soren, 76, and his wife Roopi tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday and were in home isolation as they did have symptoms, they said.
However, taking into account his age and medical record, the former chief minister was shifted to the Medanta Hospital here in the evening, they added. His condition is currently stable, official sources said. The JMM supremo’s son and Chief Minister Hemant Soren were found to be COVID-negative. His wife Kalpana also tested negative for COVID-19, officials said. They were tested for COVID-19 for the third time.
Uttarakhand’s Nainital High Court was closed for sanitisation purpose after an employee tests positive for COVID-19. Court to re-open on August 27. Haryana Transport Minister Mool Chand Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, a day before the Assembly’s monsoon session begins. On Monday, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Speaker Gian Chand Gupta were also found infected with the virus. Officials said the chief minister, admitted to Gurgaon’s Medanta hospital, is in a stable condition.
Two more IIT Kharagpur students and a hostel staff have tested positive for COVID-19, a top institute official said on Tuesday. While one student had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 19 and was sent to Kolkata, the swab samples of two of his hostel mates and the mess staff were also sent for test by the authorities, IIT Kharagpur Registrar B N Singh told PTI. The reports of the three, including the staff, confirmed that they have also been infected by the contagion. Singh said all the four were taken to a hospital in Kolkata and they are in stable condition.
