Telangana reported 1,896 new COVID-19 cases, taking the tally of infections to 2,06,644, while the death toll rose to 1,201 with 12 more fatalities, a state government bulletin said on Thursday. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) registered 294 out of the 1,896 fresh cases, followed by Rangareddy (211), Medchal Malkajgiri (154), Nalgonda (126), Siddipet (100) and other districts, it said, providing data as of 8 pm on October 7. The bulletin said 50,367 samples were tested on October 7. Cumulatively, the number of samples tested was 33,96,839. The samples tested per million population was 91,264, it added.

Assam’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 785 after seven more patients succumbed to the disease, while 1,307 new positive cases took the tally to 1,90,209, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Of the fresh fatalities, two were reported from Dibrugarh district and one each from Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Kamrup Metropolitan and Kamrup Rural. The current mortality rate in the state is 0.41 percent. The 1,307 new positive cases in the state include 317 from Kamrup Metropolitan, 135 from Jorhat and 119 from Dibrugarh, Sarma said.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) on Wednesday said it will hold its Annual Meeting 2021 in Lucerne-Burgenstock, Switzerland, from May 18 to 21, as against the traditional venue of ski resort town Davos in January-end. The change in schedule and venue was necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Announcing the new place and schedule, the WEF said the annual meeting will take place as long as all conditions are in place to guarantee the health and safety of participants and the host community. In addition, as previously announced in late August, the Annual Meeting 2021 will be preceded by high-level ‘Davos Dialogues’, digitally convened by the WEF during the week of January 25, when key global leaders will share their views on the state of the world in 2021. The Annual Meeting 2021 in Lucerne-Burgenstock will be held around the theme of ‘The Great Reset’.

The 75-year old Mani, in a Facebook post, requested all those who had come in contact with him in the past few days to be on guard. Earlier, ministers — Thomas Isaac, E P Jayarajan and V S Sunil Kumar, had tested positive. They have all recovered. The state reported the highest single day surge of COVID-19 with 10,606 people testing positive and the infection tally crossed the 2.50 lakh mark on Wednesday.

India’s drug regulator has knocked back a proposal from Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd REDY.NS to conduct a large study in the country to evaluate Russia’s Sputnik-V COVID-19 vaccine and has asked it to first test the vaccine in a smaller trial. The recommendations by an expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) noted that safety and immunogenicity data from early-stage studies being conducted overseas is small, with no inputs available on Indian participants. India’s move comes as a setback for Russia’s plan to roll-out the vaccine even before full trials show how well it works, while pushing back its efforts to win approval for the vaccine in the country that leads the world on average number of new infections. India is expected to overtake the United States over the next several weeks as the country with the world’s largest number of cases.
