England’s three worst coronavirus hotspots have all seen a sharp fall in new cases – but worrying data shows infections are soaring in other areas.

Knowsley, which was last week put into the highest Tier 3 alert level, remains the worst-affected place in the country.

It is followed by Nottingham and Liverpool, which saw 2,031 and 2,901 new cases in a week respectively.

But Public Health England data released today shows week-on-week infection rates have fallen dramatically in both cities.

Sadly this is not replicated across the country, however, with Blackburn with Darwen seeing its rate rise from 446.2 per 100,000 people to 575.8.

Rossendale, Rochdale and Salford also saw sharp increases in the seven days to Sunday, the most recent available.

Yesterday saw the highest number of confirmed infections since the start of the pandemic across the UK, while today 189 deaths and 21,242 new cases were announced by the Department of Health and Social Care.

Case rates have also continued to decrease in the cities of Newcastle, Exeter, Sheffield, Manchester and Oxford.

England could now be seeing between 53,000 and 90,000 new coronavirus cases per day, the government’s Chief Scientific Advisor warned tonight.

Sir Patrick Vallance presented stark new modelling by the government’s advisors two days ago that suggests cases could be far higher than those yet found in testing.

The last ONS infection survey, which estimates cases in England’s community including those not picked up in tests, estimated 312,000 to 362,000 people currently had coronavirus at any point in the week to October 8.

But speaking at a No10 press conference, Sir Patrick warned new ONS figures which come out tomorrow “will be higher, I’m sure”.

Matt Hancock today confirmed that Slough, Stoke-on-Trent and Coventry will all be put into the second highest tier of Covid restrictions.

The new restrictions – which will mean people cannot visit anyone from a separate bubble indoors – will come into force on Saturday.

The Health Secretary also confirmed that talks had begun with council chiefs in Warrington about moving it into the highest tier as cases continue to rise dangerously.

He told the Commons: “Unfortunately, we’re seeing rising rates of infection in Stoke-on-Trent, in Coventry and in Slough.

“In all of these areas, there are over 100 positive cases per 100,000 people. Cases are doubling around every fortnight and we’re seeing a concerning increase of cases among the over-60s.

“So we’ve agreed in partnership with local leaders to move these areas into the high local alert level, coming into force at one minute past midnight on Saturday.”
