Puducherry on Saturday added 46 more cases of coronavirus, taking the total infection count to 36,902. The toll remained 609 as no fresh fatality was reported due to the viral infection for ninth day in succession.

The COVID19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 4,689 as seven more persons tested positive for the infection, a health official said on Saturday. Four new cases were detected during contact tracing, while three have travel history, he said.

Arunachal Pradesh’s COVID-19 caseload rose to 16,231 as 27 more people tested positive for the virus, a health department official said here on Saturday. PM Narendra Modi reviews vaccine development at Zydus Cadila facility near Ahmedabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday began his three city visit to review coronavirus vaccine development work by going to pharma major Zydus Cadila’s manufacturing facility near Ahmedabad. Wearing a PPE kit, Modi reviewed the vaccine development process at the Zydus Cadila research centre in Changodar industrial area, over 20 km from Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 caseload in India climbs to over 93.5 lakh
India’s coronavirus infection cases jumped to 93.51 lakh with 41,322 fresh cases being reported in a day, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Saturday. 87,59,969 people have recovered so far taking the national recovery rate to 93.68 percent.
The death toll climbed to 1,36,200 with 485 people succumbing to the virus in the last 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The active COVID-19 caseload decreased to 4,54,940, below 5 lakh for the 18th consecutive day. The active cases stand at 4.87 percent of the total caseload, the data stated. The fatality rate stands at 1.46 percent.

PM reaches Ahmedabad to review coronavirus vaccine development
Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Ahmedabad as part of his three-city visit to review coronavirus vaccine development work at facilities there, an official said. From the airport, Modi proceeded to pharma major Zydus Cadila’s plant near Ahmedabad to get information about its vaccine development, the official said. The plant is located in the Changodar industrial area, over 20 km from Ahmedabad. Modi will be at the plant for an hour, beginning 9.30 am, the official said. Zydus Cadila has announced that the phase-I clinical trial of its vaccine candidate ZyCoV-D was over and it has commenced phase-II clinical trials from August. (Inputs from PTI)

The prime minister will reach the plant, located in the Changodar industrial area, over 20 km from Ahmedabad, around 9.30 am, an official said. Zydus Cadila had announced that the phase-I clinical trial of its vaccine candidate ZyCoV-D was over and it has commenced phase-II clinical trials from August.
Modi will then fly to Hyderabad where he is scheduled to visit vaccine maker Bharat Biotech’s facility, an official said. After landing at Hakimpet Air Force station, Modi will reach Bharat Biotech’s facility at Genome Valley at 1.30 pm.The facility is around 50 km from Hyderabad. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is undergoing phase-3 trials.
After his hour-long visit to the facility, the PM will proceed to Pune, where he will visit the Serum Institute of India (SII), which has partnered with global pharma giant AstraZeneca and the Oxford University for the vaccine. The prime minister will reach Serum Institute campus around 4.30 pm, an official said.Modi’s hour-long visit to SII is aimed at reviewing the status of the vaccine candidate for coronavirus infection and to know about its launch, production and distribution mechanism, he said. The PM will fly back to Delhi in the evening, the official said.

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: Over 800 new COVID-19 cases in Himachal, 13 more die
Thirteen more patients succumbed to COVID-19 in Himachal Pradesh, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 603, while 830 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to 38,328 in the state, official data showed. Seven new deaths linked to the novel coronavirus were reported from Shimla, two from Kangra and one each from Kinnaur, Hamirpur, Lahaul-Spiti and Solan, according to the state Health Department data. A total of 490 patients recovered from the infection on Friday, taking the recovery count to 29,483 in Himachal Pradesh. Twenty-seven COVID-19 patients have so far migrated out of the state, the Health Department said.

Ahmedabad district’s COVID-19 tally increased by 353 in the last 24 hours to reach 49,063, while 11 people died and 356 were discharged during this period, an official said on Friday. The district’s toll has now reached 2,026, he added. “Of the new cases, which is the highest for any district in Gujarat for the day, the civic limits accounted for 325 while rural areas contributed 28,” he said. “The discharge of 337 people in city limits and 19 from rural parts took the overall number of people recovered to 43,757,” he added.
Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: 1,607 new coronavirus cases in Guj; highest one-day spike
Despite night curfews in major cities and restrictions on gatherings in other parts of the state, Gujarat recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,607 coronavirus cases in 24 hours since Thursday evening. The increase in new cases has crossed the 1,600-mark for the first time in the state. The caseload, thus, reached 2,05,116, a health department release said on Friday. The death toll due to coronavirus rose to 3,938 with 16 more infected patients dying. As many as 1,388 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals since Thursday evening. Of the 16 patients who died during the day, 11 were from Ahmedabad, four from Surat and one from Gandhinagar.

Ten COVID-19 vaccines could be available by the middle of next year if they win regulatory approval, but their inventors need patent protection, the head of the global pharmaceutical industry group said on Friday. Vaccines by Pfizer and BioNtech, as well as Moderna and AstraZeneca have shown promising results in large clinical trials, but there is no question of “cutting corners”, said Thomas Cueni, director-general of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA). “So far 3 we have 3 out of 3 were hits. I would expect that we will see something similar with Johnson & Johnson, I would expect that we would see similar positive results with Novavax, and many others, Sanofi Pasteur, GSK are in there, Merck,” he said. ‘Big Pharma’ and biotech firms have invested heavily in research and development and in boosting manufacturing during the pandemic to be able to roll out vaccine doses, Cueni told a Geneva news briefing.
Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: 3,093 new COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan, 18 more die
Rajasthan recorded 18 more fatalities due to the novel coronavirus on Friday, taking the COVID-19 death toll in the state to 2,255, according to a health department bulletin. The state also reported 3,093 fresh cases that brought the infection count to 2,60,040 on Friday. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 28,183, the bulletin said. According to the bulletin, 2,29,602 people have been discharged after treatment till now. The death from the pandemic stands at 426 in state capital Jaipur, followed by 230 in Jodhpur, 181 in Ajmer, 160 in Bikaner, 133 in Kota, 103 in Bharatpur, 90 in Udaipur and 85 in Pali. Of the fresh COVID-19 cases, 643 were recorded in Jaipur, 531 in Jodhpur, 290 in Ajmer, 241 in Kota, 147 in Alwar, 127 in Udaipur, 104 in Bikaner, 101 in Bhilwara, 89 in Bharatpur, 88 in Nagaur, besides cases reported in other districts of the state.

Karnataka reported 1,526 new cases of COVID-19 and 12 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 8,81,086 and the toll to 11,738 on Friday, the health department said. The day also saw 1,451 patients getting discharged after recovery while the active cases touched 25,379. Bengaluru Urban district reported 808 cases and six deaths, followed by Mysuru with 75 cases and one fatality while the remaining was scattered over various districts. Cumulatively 8,81,086 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and these included 11,738 deaths and 8,43,950 discharges, the health department said in a bulletin. Of the active cases, 24,978 patients are stable in isolation at designated hospitals. As many as 401 were undergoing treatment in intensive care units. Most of those who succumbed to COVID-19 on Friday had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI).

Maharashtra’s COVID-19 case tally on Friday reached 18,08,550 as 6,185 fresh infections were recorded, said a health official here. The state also reported 85 fatalities during the day, taking the COVID-19 death toll to 46,898, he said. On the other hand, 4,089 patients were discharged from hospitals after treatment, taking the tally of recovered patients to 16,72,627. There are now 87,969 active coronavirus patients in Maharashtra. Mumbai city reported 1,074 new cases, which pushed its caseload to 2,80,818, while its death toll rose to 10,757 with 17 fatalities being recorded on Friday. The state has so far conducted 1,06,35,600 tests.

Three out of every four children reported increase in negative feelings since the outbreak of COVID-19, with many citing reasons like ambiguity over getting back to school and loss of livelihood in the family, according to a new report. Released by child rights NGO Save the Children on Friday, the report ‘A Generation at Stake: Protecting India’s Children from the Impact of COVID-19’ covered 1,598 parents and 989 children (aged between 11-17 years) from 11 states and two union territories. The report found that three out of every four children in the participants group reported increase in negative feelings since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The reasons for the negative feelings included ambiguity over getting back to school, no contact with teachers or friends, loss of livelihoods in the family leading to insecurities and violence in household relationships, it stated.
