At least 3,281 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in West Bengal on Wednesday, which raised the tally to 2,57,049, while 59 fatalities pushed the death toll in the state to 4,958, the health department said in its bulletin. Altogether 2,954 people have recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Scientists say genes that some people have inherited from their Neanderthal ancestors may increase the likelihood of suffering severe forms of COVID-19. A study by European scientists published Wednesday by the journal Nature identifies a cluster of genes that are linked to a higher risk of hospitalization and respiratory failure in patients who are infected with the new coronavirus. Researchers Hugo Zeberg and Svante Paabo determined that the genes belong to a group, or haplotype, which likely came from Neanderthals. The haplotype is found in about 16% of the population in Europe and half the population in South Asia, while in Africa and East Asia it is non-existent.

India’s active COVID-19 cases constituted 15.11 per cent of the total caseload on as on Wednesday as against 33.32 percent on August 1, the Union Health Ministry said. The ministry’s data updated at 8 am showed there are 9,40,441 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country. “From 33.32 percent on August 1 to 15.11 percent on September 30, active cases have less than halved in two months,” it said in a statement while highlighting that the country “continues to report a trend of steadily declining active cases as a percentage of the total caseload”. Keeping a “continuous upward trajectory”, India’s recovery rate has touched 83.33 percent with86,428 patients having recuperated and discharged in a day. The total number of recoveries has surged to 51,87,825 and exceed active cases of COVID-19 by 42,47,384.

The antioxidant enzyme is also commonly used worldwide in food production and as a dietary supplement. “There is a lot of focus on vaccines and antiviral drugs, and rightly so,” said Yunfeng Lu from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US. “In the meantime, our research suggests this enzyme could offer a very effective therapeutic solution for treatment of hyperinflammation that occurs due to SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as hyperinflammation generally, said Lu, a senior author of the study published in the journal Advanced Materials.

Arunachal Pradesh’s COVID-19 tally rose to 9,553 on Wednesday as 220 more people, including 11 security personnel, tested positive for the disease, an official said.     The death toll increased to 16 after a 53-year-old man succumbed to the infection while undergoing treatment at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) at Naharlagun, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said. “The man was suffering from kidney-related problems and admitted to TRIHMS for dialysis. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 and died on Tuesday,” he said.
