Two more persons died of COVID-19 in Ladakh, taking the death toll in the Union Territory to 73 while 46 fresh cases pushed the tally to 6,024, officials said on Wednesday. Forty-six more patients also recovered from the disease, bringing down the active cases to 689 556 in Leh district and 133 in Kargil district, they said.

Drug firm Cipla on Wednesday announced the launch of antibody detection kits for COVID19 in India under the brand name ‘ELIFast’ in partnership with KARWA Ltd, under the technology transfer from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). “As part of the collaborative effort, Cipla will be responsible for the marketing and distribution of the SARS CoV2IgG antibody detection ELISA that will be manufactured by KARWA Ltd,” Cipla said in a statement.

With 2,049 fresh cases, the COVID-19 tally of Uttar Pradesh rose to 4,76,034 on Wednesday while the death toll due to the disease reached 6,958 as 18 more people succumbed to the virus. “In the last 24 hours, 2,049 fresh cases were detected while 2,742 people were discharged. The number of active cases in the state is 25,487 while 4,43,589 patients have been treated and discharged.The death toll due to the disease has reached 6,958 with 18 fresh deaths,” Additional Chief Secretary, Medical and Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters. The total number of cases has reached 4,76,034 and the recovery rate of the state is 93.18 percent, he said.

Sri Lanka’s Western province, which includes the most populous cities of Colombo and Gampaha, will be placed under curfew from midnight on Thursday following a surge in the COVID-19 cases in recent days, police said on Wednesday. The curfew would remain till the early hours of November 2. Authorities said the curfew would serve as a deterrent to people trying to make use of the long weekend starting from Friday. The move comes after over 60 different police divisions were placed under curfew since October 4 due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases caused by infections at a garment export factory and the largest fish wholesale market.

The ongoing economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is deeper and likely to be more protracted than past recessions in Singapore, the city-state’s central bank said in a report on Wednesday. Some sectors of the economy, especially those that are travel-related, may not return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of next year as the Singapore economy faces a gradual but uneven recovery, the Channel News Asia reported, citing the report by Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The travel sector is expected to see prolonged headwinds as borders reopen very gradually, said MAS. Singapore may lag the global recovery in air transport given the absence of domestic flights, cautioned the MAS.

An analysis of more than 80 studies reporting complications experienced by COVID-19 patients has revealed that about one-third of them have abnormalities in the frontal lobe of the brain, findings which shed light on the neurological symptoms of the disease. The review of studies, published in Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy, focused on abnormalities detected using electroencephalogram (EEG) scans, which are used to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain. “We found more than 600 patients that were affected in this way. Before, when we saw this in small groups we weren’t sure if this was just a coincidence, but now we can confidently say there is a connection,” said Zulfi Haneef, assistant professor of neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in the US.

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: Some evidence shows children could be COVID spreaders, says ICMR

There is some evidence which shows that children who were earlier thought to be protected against coronavirus infection can be “spreaders, rather than super-spreaders”, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said on Tuesday. Speaking on the coronavirus infection spread in the country among children, Bhargava said tat overall the figure in India is that below the age of 17 years, only 8 per cent are COVID-19 positive. “Below five years, the figure would probably be less than a per cent but then we can come back with a figure for this,” he said. Mizoram’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,607 on Wednesday as 80 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. Twenty-seven school students, the majority of them staying in hostels, 11 Army jawans, and one Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) personnel are among the new patients, he said. The Army jawans and the MAP personnel had returned from other states, the official said. Aizawl district reported the highest number of new cases at 76, followed by two in Lawngtlai and one each in Khawzawl and Saitual districts, he said. Sixty-three of the 80 new cases have been locally transmitted, the official said.

With 1,481 new cases, Telangana’s coronavirus tally reached 2.34 lakh while fourmore deaths pushed the toll in the state to 1,319. Greater Hyderabad  Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 279, followed by MedchalMalkajgiri 138 and Rangareddy 111 districts, a government bulletin said on Wednesday providing data as of 8 PM on October 27. As many as 17,916 are under treatment and 40,081 samples were tested on October 27. Cumulatively 41.55 lakh samples have been tested. The samples tested per million population was 1,11,649, the bulletin said. The case fatality rate in the state was 0.56 percent, while it was 1.5 percent at the national level. The recovery rate in Telangana was 91.78 percent, while it was 90.7 percent in the country.

China has reported 42 new COVID-19 cases, including 22 from Kashgar prefecture in Xinjiang province where all the 4.74 million people underwent tests following the detection of a villager as an asymptomatic carrier, the health authorities said on Wednesday. This comes a day after the Kashgar prefecture reported 183 coronavirus cases after the completion of COVID-19 tests for all the residents in the region, according to official media reports. Of the news cases, 22 infections were reported in Kashgar’s Shufu County, the National Health Commission said on Wednesday. The local health authorities said an epidemiological survey for virus tracing is still underway and the medical expert team has so far ruled out a connection between Kashgar and the epidemic in the regional capital of Urumqi in July.

Jharkhand’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 1 lakh-mark on Wednesday as 318 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. The new cases have taken the state’s caseload to 1,00,224, he said. Four more people have succumbed to the infection, pushing the state’s coronavirus death toll to 876, the official said. Jharkhand now has 5,474 active cases, while 93,874 people have been cured of the disease so far, he said. The state has tested 22,162 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the official said.

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 4,274 on Wednesday as 21 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. Five new patients have travel history, while 16 infections were detected during contact tracing, he said. Twenty-two more people have been cured of the disease, the official said. The Union territory now has 197 active coronavirus cases, while 4,019 people have recovered from the disease and 58 patients have succumbed to the infection so far, he said. The administration has so far sent 84,308 samples for COVID-19 tests, of which 84,298 reports have been received and 10 are awaited, the official added.

The death toll mounted to slightly above the 1.20 lakh mark with 508 new fatalities. The total active cases are 6,10,803, after a decrease of 15,054 in the last 24 hours. The total number of recoveries stands at 72,59,509 with 58,439 new discharges in the last 24 hours.
